Talk about fresh meat. But in the end, there are two things you truly look forward to, especially if your team didn’t make it that far: the gathering of the fans and the commercials.

Although, quite frankly, back in the day these titles could be shot, acted and edited with the same efficiency and professionalism as the A-titles and, in fact, some of them have become veritable movie classics.

Miriam Martinez describes the year she waited to welcome her first foster child – a sweet, shy Puerto Rican girl – to her home in the Austin neighborhood of Chicago as the “longest year of her life.”

Four years ago, the then-28-year-old teacher’s assistant felt an unshakeable longing to be a parent. Soon after, that fire was fueled when she stumbled across a commercial about foster parenting from UCAN, the social service agency through which she would eventually take in four foster children. “I was excited to be a mother,” Martinez says, lingering over the last word. “To provide for someone less fortunate.”

He’s been in the revenge business since 1979 when he exploded on the big screen as Mad Max (although he’s been quite good at some other non-revenge driven roles). For he, in the words of Ezekiel 25:17, as quoted by Samuel Jackson in “Pulp Fiction,” will always “strike down upon those with great vengeance and with furious anger those who attempt to poison and destroy my brothers.” And, boy, when it comes to smiting enemies with righteous anger, Mel does it in a no-nonsense, almighty kinda way.

“I only watch the Super Bowl for the commercials.” It’s the excuse that you hear over and over from friends and families as they share delicious fatty snacks, pizza and hot dogs before, during and after the game. But you may find that sometimes, even though you don’t get it, the game is worth watching as well. And let us not forget the half-time show.
